Chris Brown - X: Album Review

In an interview with MTV Chris Brown said that he titled his album "X" for many reasons and made it very numerical. Brown said “X is a Roman numeral for 10; this also symbolizes 10 years of me being an artist. I started when I was 14.” Brown also states “X also means my birthday, 5/5/89. Five and five is 10; eight, nine, 10, so X,” he explained. “And then another quick one is 24. It’s the 24th letter in the alphabet, and I’ll be 24 when X comes out. That’s kind of it in a nutshell.”

Chris has released an array of singles before the release of his album which include "Fine China", "Don't Think They Know", "Love More", "New Flame" and the highly infectious and popular track "Loyal".

The first track which is the title of the album "X" seems to indict that Brown is moving on with such lyrics as "I swear to god I'm moving on" which may or not be about Karrueche or even Rihanna. The next track "Add Me In" is one of my favourite tracks despite the arithmetic metaphors all through the track, but the production is on point and is clearly laced with Michael Jackson influences. The next couple of tracks are a Chris Brown speciality where he just sings about girls and his sexual desires which is clearly evident on the track "Drown In It, where R. Kelly and Brown sing back to each other about female ejaculation.

The next half of the album definitely shows Brown's more sensitive and more vulnerable side. Brown sounds apologetic and sincere on his songs with Brandy "Do Better" and the Kendrick Lamar featured song "Autumn Leaves" who totally steals the show from Brown with his rap. The next track "See You Around" is one of my favourites as well, it's a vibey country song which he sings about a woman loving another man and him wishing he tried a lot more harder for her.

"X" definitely has a lot of worthy tracks and some of Brown's best but there is a few album fillers which you may just skip every time. "X" is also not just a plain old one genre style of album which personally I don't mind but I know some people won't be so intrigued as it can jump from R&B, EDM and Country. 21 songs may just be too many for this album as some of the best songs get drowned out by the not so great tracks.

If you're a Chris Brown fan this is definitely for you as you will be getting 21 brand new songs but for the not so die hard fans there are definitely some great stand out tracks but you will need to dig through some of the unnecessary tracks.

Best tracks: "Add Me In", "Loyal", "See You Around".

4 stars out of 5.
